Rise before threshing or in the husk is called paddy. During 20 th century paddy fifld farming became the dominant form of growing rice  Paddy field farming is cultivated in Thailand, Combodia, Bangladesh, China, Taiwan, India, Indonesia Iran, Japan and more. California paddy fields are a major source atmospheric methane and have been estimated to contribute in the range of 50 to 100 million ton of the gas per annum. The word paddy is derived from the Malay word padi [rice plant] Paddy field farming goes back Thousands of years in Korea. Although Chinas agricultural out put is the largest in the world.only about 15% of its total land area can be cultivated. Rice is the most important crop in China. India has the largest paddy output in the world and is also the fourth largest exporter of rice in the world. Agriculture in Srilanka mainly depends on rice production. Around 879000 farmer families are engaged in paddy cult
ivation in Srilanka. In Madagascar the average annual consumption of rice is 130 kg per person.,one of the largest in the world. According to 2012 report said that China produced 204 million metric ton rice and is the highest producer of rice in that year. India at second place produced 152 metric ton of rice.
Paddy fields are common sight throughout India. West Bengal is the largest rice producing state in India. Followed by Tamilnadu, Karnataka, Kerala and other states. Paddy is cultivated atleast twice a year in most part of India. Two seasons known as Rabi and Karif.  Paddy cultivation should not be confused with cultivation of deep water rice which is grown in flooded conditions with water more than 50 cm. Many festivals conducted paddy harvest in India. Onam festival in Kerala,Bihu festival in Assam, Sankaranthi in Andhra Pradesh, Thai Pongal in Tamilnadu, Makar Sankaranthi, in Karnataka and Nappanna in West Bengal. Kaveri delta region of Thanjavur is historically known as THE RICE BOWL OF TAMI<NADU. Also Kuttanadu is the rice bowl of Kerala.  Many varieties cultivated here in Tamilnadu.  IR20, IR50, MDU1, MDU2  PONNI are some varieyies. These varieties harvested at 130 days. 40 kg seeds need for one hectare for cultivation. Averagely 6 ton yeild for one hectare. Not only in Thanjavur other places such as Madurai, Palani, Anamalai are suitable places for paddy cultivation. Paddy fields need more water than the other crops. Always in wet condition for these fields. Tamilnadu Agriculture University in Coimbatore gives more information and helps for farmers about paddy crop and also other crops. 
Rice is a main food all over the world. In India especially Tamilnadu people mostly like rice food. Rice cooked with cooker in every home. Side dishes such as Sambar, Rasam, Porial are famous for Tamilnadu culture. Other food items Idly, Dosa, pongal  and more are made of rice. In villages rice boiled with water called kanchi is good for health. Rice is marketed here at 50 rupees per kg. 25  kg pack,50 kg pack and 75 kg packages are available here. Rice husk is feed for cows,bullocks, goats.In our tamil culture pongal gets most important. At that festival farmers give this pongal to cows and worship the god. This culture continued from ancient days to now a days. In hotels, restaurent meals have an impartant food item during lunch time. Meals made of rice only.
