Anamalai Tiger Reserve is a pristine 958 sq km reserve of tropical jungle Shola forest and grass land rising to 2300 m and spilling over the western Ghats into Kerala between Kodaikkanal and Coimbatore. This tiger reserve is home to all kinds of exotic endemic wild life,much of it rare and endangered- including leopards and around 30 elusive tigers though you are much more likely to see lion,macaques,peacocks,languors,spotted deer and elephants and crocodiles.The Anamalai Tiger Reserve has a long management history since 1848.It is in Coimbatore South forest division which was a model forest division for the Madras state. Till 1879 Anamalai was one range under the charge of Sub Assistant Conservator.
Anamalai Tiger Reserve is carved out of the Anamalai. The Tamilnadu part of the reserve is called as Anamalai tiger reserve. Geographically it is located between the longitudes 70 degree E and longitudes 10 degree N. The Anamalai tiger reserve falls within the western Ghats mountain chain of south west India. The tiger reserve falls in four revenue taluks include in Tamilnadu. One of them is Pollachi and Valpari in Coimbatore district. Other is Udumalpet in Tiruppur district. And the other one is Kodaikkanal in Dindugal district.The official head quarter of Anamalai Tiger Reserve is at Pollachi the administratively it falls under Tamilnadu forest department. The tiger reserve supports wet evergreen forests,semi ever green forests,dry thorn and shola forests.
The Tiger Reserve supports healthy population of several endangered wild animals. Fishes-70 species, Amphibians-70 species, Reptiles-120 species, Birds-300 species, Mammal-80 species. The presence of more than 25 tigers under scores the healthiness of this eco system. The Parambikulam-Aliyar project and Amaravathy dam housed in the Anamalais play a vital role in the region economy. The agricultural prosperity of the plains in Pollachi,Udumalpet and hilly taluk of Valpari. It is earlier known as Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary. Elephants were earlier trained used at Anamalai for timber operations. This tiger reserve located exactly at the distance of 56 kilometers of Pollachi. Masani Amman temple is famous for this Anamalai hills.
