SILK
Silk is produced by several insects like silkworms but generally only the silk of moth caterpillars has been used for textile manufacturing. There has been some research into others types of silk. Which differ at the moleculor level silk is produced mainly by the larvae insects. Several kinds of wild silk which are produced by caterpillars other than the mulberry silkworm have been known and used in China South Asia and Europe since ancient days. However the scale of productions was always far similar than for cultivated silk. There are several reasons for this. Commercial silks originate from reared silkworm pupae which are bred to produce a white color silk thread with no mineral on the surface.The pupae are killed by either dipping them in boiling water.
Silk has a long history in India It is known as Rosham Eastern and North India and Pattu in South India. India is second largest producer in the world after China. India is also the largest consumer of silk in the world. About 97 percent of of the raw mulberry silk comes from five Indian staes namely Andhra pradesh,Karnataka, Jammu and Kashmir Tamilnadu and West Bengal.Silk City Ramnagara and Mysore contribute to a majority of silk production in Karnataka. Muga, Eri pat silk,Muga Golden Silk are produced by silkworms that are native only to Assam. Silk garments and sarees produced in Kancheepuran ,Pochampally,Dharmavaram, Arani are famous for all over world.
