Emu is the second largest living bird by height relative the ostrich where it is the native Australia. The emus range covers most of mainland Australia. Emus are soft feathered brown flightless birds with long necks and legs and can reach up to 2 meters height average. Emus can travel great distances and when necessary can sprint at 50 km/h they forage for a variety of plants and insects but have been known for without eating. Emu is an important cultural icon of Australia appearing on the coat of arms, and various coins. Emus are family of Dromaiidae and genus of Dromaius. Emu is much larger bird standing higher on its legs and having the neck larger one and the head is also covered with feathers except the throat and fore part of the neck. The height of the bird is up to 150 cm to 190 cm and the length is from 130 cm to 160 cm and the weight is from 18 kg to 60 kg. Females are usually larger than males.
. Their feet have only three toes. Emus have good eyesight and hearing which allows them to detect threats at some distance. The neck of the emu is pale blue and feathers are black.The eyes of emu are protected by nictitating membranes and emus have a tracheal pouch. The vocatisations of emus mostly consist of various booming and gruning sounds. Emus form breeding pairs during the summer months.Emus were used as a source of food by indigenous Australians. The early Europeon settlers killed emus to provide food and used their fat for fueling lamps. In the United States it was reported in 2013 that many ranchers had left the emu business. In Tamilnadu emu farm business is a main business some years ago. Many of them invest more amount in this emu farm business. Lakhs of rupees invested these business. These lakhs of amount growth many crores in 2012. Growth of huge amount gives great desire to people. So many more people not only in city area the village people also great desire to invest this emu business. But unfortunately the owners of emu farms cheated their clients and escaped. So people have great angry and take legal actions. After these happened emu farms are destroyed and emu business is come to an end in Tamilnadu. Many of the emu farms located in Salem district mostly. also other places such as Erode, Coimbatore and many other places involved this business and closed soon. Then after public have no interest for this business and it should be come to an end. Emu meat is a medicinal food also egg is another medicinal food. The oil of emu and feathers are also for commercial use. The meat ,egg, oil are costlier than other birds.
