Peacocks and peahens - these are the birds known as peafowl members of the pheasant family. All though most people call the species peacocks the word only refers the male bird.Just like among chickens where the male is called a rooster or cock and the female is called hen male peafowl are peacocks and female peafowl are peahens and babies are peachicks. There are two peafowl species Indian are blue peafowl and green peafowl. Most people are familiar with the indian peafowl since that is the kind found in many zoos and parks. The length of females 35 to 43 inches and male males 70 to 98 inches. Weight of females 6 to 8 pounds males 8 to 13 pounds. A group of peafowl is called an ostentation or pride - very appropriate for this showy bird. There are several genetic color mutations of indian peafowl including white. The Indian peafowl is the National bird of India and is protected in country. To hindus the peafowl is a sacred bird the spots on the peacock train symbolize the eyes of the gods. Peacocks are mentioned in the bible as one of the most precious items brought from Asia by king Solomans ships. Peacocks are ground feeders that eat insects, plants and more.        
Indian peafowl have a range that includes India,Pakistan and Srilanka and green peafowl are found in South East Asia. However both species follow a certain routine every day. Normally when a peacock walking around his train trails behind him.Now protected by law in China public awareness compaigns are underway to help these endangered beautiful birds. The peacock has some brightest feathers and one of the most impressive courting displays of any bird in the world.                               
 In Tamilnadu peacock worship by all tamil people because it is the favourite bird of god Murugan. In murugan temples such as Palanai, Thiruchenthur,Thiruthani, and all murugan templeas we have to see the statues of peacock for worship. In Coimbatore district we have to see peacocks,peahens for all rural areas such as villages forms and trees. Sometimes these peacocks destroyed the farms of groundnut, maize and some crops of farmers. In Tamilnadu peacock dance is famous for rural areas.
