BHAVANI


Bhavani river originating from south west corner of Nilgiri hills. It is tributary of the river Cauvery.It is located in western ghats Tamilnadu. It enters Mukkali away 20 kilo meter of Palakkad district at Kerala. It goes through north east direction reached Attappadi Valley about population at 25 kilo meter surroundings. Attappadi reserve forest well known forest with tribal groups. Irular, Mudugar, Kurumbar has rich culture there. Mannarkad there with 1000 species flowering plants species of orchids mammals and butterflies there. 12 major stream Bhavani river there. The Varagar is the the largest tributaries. The Siruvani river perennial stream and Kodungarappallam river flowing through from south and south east respectively join the Bhavani at Koodappatti Kerala. The Bhavani joins Cauveri at the northern part of Erode city near Bhavani. On the banks of the river Bhavani Sri Sangameswarar Temple located and it is the one of the important place of people worship there. Most of the people visited this place at Amavasyai-the Tamil culture festival. During the Tamil months of Adi, Purattasi and Thai the peoples go there and worship there for grand fathers for their soul. So very exciting place there.Having temples of Lord Siva, Sakthi, Vishnu and Mahalakshmi there for worship. This is a pilgrimage center. 


Bhavani river is 217 kilo meters long and flow through the states of Kerala and Tamilnadu. Area of 6200 square kilo meters about 87 percentage of located in Tamilnadu. Mostly it flows through Erode and Coimbatore district in Tamilnadu.  Major towns such as Mukkali, Athikkadavu, Koodappatti, Mettuppalayam, Bhavanisagar, Sathiamangalam, Gopichettipalayam and Bhavani. Bhavani turns through northeast direction flows through Attappadi for 25 kilo meters along the inter state border. The Kunda river coming from the north to join with Bhavani river in western Tamilnadu at Athikkadavu. Bhavani river is joined with Siruvani river at Coimbatore district. Also it joins the river Kodumparappallam at Kotappatti. Then it blows through east direction along with Nilgiris. It enters the plain lands near Mettuppalayam near Bathra Kali Amman Temple. Then Coonur river coming from Coonur that joins Bhavani river. On the banks of Bhavani river at Mettuppalayam Vanabathra Kaliamman Temple is famous for devotees. All the people from Coimbatore Erode and many places the people come there and worship the Goddess of Bathra Kaliamman and make full of non-vegetarian food and enjoy full day. Also people take bath in Bhavani river and worship goddess simularly. 


About 90 percent of Bhavani rivers water is used for agricultural irrigation. Erode and Coimbatore district lands mostly irrigated for this Bhavani river irrigation. Bhavani river joins Cauvery at the Kooduthurai hol site near Bhavani. Bhavani is also known as Carpet City. Because blankets and carpets manufactured mostly there. Moyal river a major tributary originating in Mudhumalai flow through Nilgiris and it blocked by the Lower Bhavani Dam. The Lower Bhavani Project canal feeding mostly Erode district and Sathyamangalam. Kalingarayan irrigation canal is also across the river there and used as irrigation of landline areas. Also Bhavani Sagar Dam is located on the Bhavani river in Erode district. Also Kodiveri Dam is located near Gobichettipalayam in western Tamilnadu. This Kodiveri Dam constructed by Kongalvan in the year 1125. So Bhavani river is also main project in Tamilnadu.
