Aliar Reservoir located in Aliyar village near Pollachi town in Coimbatore district foothills of Valparai in the western ghats. About 65 kilometers away from Coimbatore. Aliyar dam was constructed during 1959 to 1969 across the Aliyar river. It is opened on 2nd October 1962 by the Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and Chief Minister of Tamilnadu K.Kamarajar. Hydro Electric Power system started on 2002. Aliyar dam is located above 918 feet from the main sea level on the Anamalai mountain range inter connected with in the Anamalai Tiger Reservoir. Hydel power projects of Aliyar inter connected with the water sources from Parambikulam, Sholaiyar, Thunakkadavu, Thekkadi and Palar rivers. Also for irrigation projects.
Aliyar Dam Park-
In Aliyar dam there is a park for tourist. In this park there is a aquarium play area and boat house also there. Surroundings are green and lovely area for tourist persons. Monkey falls is also a tourist spot located nearby Aliyar just 6 kilometer away. Many of us go and enjoy that hill spot with their family during holidays. All we know that Aliyar dam surface area is 2.50 sq ml .Average depth 18.2 meter. Maximum depth 36.5 meter. The fisheries department is also adapted there. It includes 40 species belonging to 13 families of fishes. At present the discharge of water released to Pollachi canal, Vettaikkaranpudur canal and around river places. Irrigation is main project.
